A Learning Support Teacher is responsible for meeting the learning needs of students requiring learning support at Haven of Peace Academy. He/she works closely with the Learning Support Coordinator, principals and teaching staff to identify needs, develop strategies for meeting those needs, and implement the strategies both in and out of the classroom as needed.  The Learning Support Teacher is a member of the teaching staff (Learning Support department) and reports to the Learning Support Coordinator.


He/she is responsible for:

  • Develop strategies for meeting the identified learning needs of students, using creative and individualized solutions as needed.
  • Participate in developing Individual Support Plans (ISPs) for individual students according to their needs.
  • Meet with teachers, parents and students to discuss and agree to the identified strategies.
  • Implement the various strategies identified, documented and agreed in the ISP.
  • Meet with individual students to help with coursework as needed.
  • Meet with groups of students to address academic needs as they arise.
  • Maintain a positive environment in the resource room, conducive to student engagement and learning.
  • Maintain proper, positive rapport with students in order to develop nurturing and encouraging relationships.
  • Assist the Learning Support Coordinator with any other student needs.


All staff are expected to:

  • Have a working knowledge of the school’s curriculum
  • Attend staff meetings and in-service training days
  • Pursue professional development in line with job responsibilities and other courses as directed by school management


Minimum qualifications:

  • Committed evangelical Christian
  • Fluent in English
  • College degree, training in Learning Support highly preferred
  • Experience working with children, particularly those considered at-risk or with special needs
