Do you have a passion for social action and for supporting sanctuary seekers as they rebuild their lives?
Kairos Housing grew out of a shared vision between local churches in Blackburn with Darwen. Our mission is to show the love of Jesus as we provide sanctuary, build community, and seek justice.
The people we house have often been sleeping on park benches, sofa-surfing, or staying in situations that were not safe. Some have had an asylum claim refused and cannot work, rent or claim benefits. Others have just been granted refugee status and have days to leave Home Office accommodation with nowhere to go. We offer a home, and we walk with them until they can stand on their own.
Our guests arrive having been told, in a hundred different ways, that they are a problem to be managed. They have heard themselves described as an invasion, and watched their right to safety argued over as if it were a matter of opinion. Our radical welcome is the opposite of that. It means saying welcome home and meaning it — a safe place, a bed, community, support and belonging. Not hostility, and not even tolerance: we are deeply sorry they had to make the journey they had to take to get here, but we are genuinely glad they are here. We publicly challenge that hostility and speak up for a fairer and more compassionate system. It is part of our mission, not a sideline to it.
Our current Operations Manager is leaving us to train for ordained ministry in the Church of England, so we are looking for someone to take on the day-to-day running of Kairos Housing.
That means our properties and the standards we keep them to, rental income and housing benefit, regulatory compliance and repairs. It means line managing a small team and coordinating the support our guests receive. It means the harder conversations too — about arrears, house rules, and occasionally asking someone to leave. And it means holding our Christian ethos: leading staff prayer and devotionals, building partnerships with local churches, and being available to pray with guests who ask.
Everything in this job about compliance, rent collection and record-keeping exists to make that welcome possible and sustainable.
This role is open to two very different people. If you are an experienced operations or housing professional, you could hit the ground running, and we would expect to appoint at or near the top of the salary range. If you have the right values and transferable skills but not the technical background, we will train you — including a fully funded professional housing qualification with paid study leave.
It is an occupational requirement of this post that the postholder is a practising Christian, in accordance with Schedule 9 of the Equality Act 2010. Our guests come from many different faiths and from none, and are never expected to share ours.
