Mission and Charity overseas trips can be transformative for both the individuals travelling and those around them. If you are about to embark on the mission or charity trip of your lifetime, finding appropriate cover for your journey is not just part of being prepared, it is a crucial element of any overseas trip planning.

Whether you are embarking on a four week or six-month long trip, insurance is essential in the event of unforeseen circumstances. There’s no need to worry; SALT has thirty years of experience and works closely with an insurer to source and provide cover for the most unique situations.

Whilst each trip will have different insurance requirements depending on the work being carried out, we recommend reviewing your policy documents before your travel dates and ensuring the following key covers are included as standard, regardless of the trip.

Medical treatment

Medical and Emergency Repatriation Expenses

Not to be confused with a Private Medical Insurance policy, your Medical and Emergency Repatriation cover is equally important, as it pays for critical transportation during a medical crisis. This can include travel to and from a medical facility in the country you are visiting, or in some cases, transport back to your home country when necessary.

Emergency repatriation can be costly, especially if a flight is required to return to your home. That’s why our specialised mission insurance policies will cover up to £5,000,000* for Group trips in Repatriation for when it is needed most.

*£10,000,000 policy limit available for our annual group policies where applicable.

Please note that your insurance adviser must also be made aware of any pre-existing medical conditions, where cover for such conditions can be considered via medical screening. Medical section provides comprehensive cover against accidental injuries and acute medical conditions during your trip.

Flight cancelled

Cancellation and Curtailment

In the event of you having to cancel or curtail your trip, this insurance provides cover due to the following perils listed within the policy. Your death, accidental bodily injury or illness.

  • The death, accidental bodily injury or illness of Your Immediate Relative, Close Business Colleague or any person with whom you have arranged to travel, reside or conduct business.
  • You or any person with whom you have arranged to travel, reside or conduct business:
  • Being subject to compulsory quarantine, jury service or subpoena.
  • Who is required to be present at your home or place of business in your home country following burglary or major damage.
  • The cancellation or curtailment of scheduled public transport services consequent upon strike, riot or civil commotion.

During these unexpected and often stressful moments, your insurance policy is essential for those unexpected expenses.

Higher-Risk Destinations

For those travelling to higher-risk environments, your coverage may need to be tailored with the help of a SALT Insurance Adviser. To help gauge whether your destination is higher risk, we suggest researching it via the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) website to obtain the latest foreign travel advice.1

Depending on your destination, an insurance adviser can determine whether your policy needs to include Terrorism/War cover or if cover needs to be referred to Salt for consideration should the destination be in an area the FCDO advise against all travel.

Personal items

Personal Belongings and Essential Documents

We recognise at SALT, how even just temporary loss of your personal belongings or essential loss could be detrimental to your mission. You may find yourself in a situation where your essential documents have suffered damage or even stolen. In times like this, sometimes the only available option to carry on your mission, is to buy a replacement.

Essential travel documents may include your:

• Passport

• Visa

• Travel tickets

• Any other necessary items

Your personal belongings and property will also be covered on an indemnity basis. Some items, such as jewellery and valuables have item limits - always refer to your policy documents to confirm what you can claim if you suffer a loss of your belongings whilst on your mission.

Business Equipment

Whilst not all business equipment is essential for travel, we recognise that for many missionaries, their devices and equipment are vital to their work and livelihoods while abroad. A comprehensive insurance policy will provide cover for personal computers, portable electronic equipment, and mobile phones used by the policyholder for business purposes.

Our standard SALT policy will even cover new equipment acquired during your trip.

Canoeing

Recreational ActivitiesDuring your mission trip, you may find yourself taking the opportunity to explore new ventures, alongside sharing your faith. Our standard SALT insurance policy includes a wide range of activities, including but not limited to:

• Archery

• Camping

• Pony trekking

• Yachting

Your policy documents will show the full list and speak with an adviser if you wish to add any additional activities. These could include alpine skiing, ice hockey, fencing, or even tobogganing.

If an activity is not on this list or on your policy documents, cover may still be provided if you are able to refer it to your SALT Insurance Adviser for consideration. This is the same for Recreational Activities which could be deemed as higher risk.

What can be covered

Our insurance policies can be catered to your group size, allowing cover for everyone who is going with you. When arranging your insurance policy, simply let us know who will be travelling. We have experience in providing mission and charity travel insurance for individuals, couples, families and both small and large groups.

You will also have the option to choose from the following types of trips for your travel insurance:

• Single Trip Travel – for trips between 5–270 days

• Annual Multi-Trip Travel – for trips of up to 60 or 90 days per trip

• Long Stay Travel – for single trips up to 365 days
