This book is written by Sue Eenigenburg and Eva Burkholder, who together have over 70 years of ministry experience, most of which is cross-cultural. It is broken down into three sections.
- Sue Eenigenburg focuses on not leaving the field too early and having the “grit” to stay through difficult times (where possible)
- Eva Burkholder addresses those who stay behind when a teammate leaves the field
- Both authors attempt to assist those who are in the process of choosing to stay or go.
The book draws on the authors’ personal experiences and input from other cross-cultural workers. Each chapter offers tangible, practical applications to address challenges. It offers sections for personal reflection, response, and prayer for divine guidance. All the sections provide an opportunity to process the information in a meaningful and intentional manner. Decisions should never be made casually.
The book provides the reader with examples, ideas, methods, and resources for approaching difficult situations in a way that honours God. Using a biblical foundation, the book provides practical steps for reflection while allowing one to process different scenarios unique to them. Every cross-cultural worker will, at some point, come to a crossroads in deciding whether to stay or leave, and will encounter those who are going or being left behind. Grit to Stay Grace to Go helped me process the challenges and difficult emotions that accompany leaving or staying. The part of the book on guilt helped with understanding that there is no sin in wanting what you want, regardless of how it makes others feel.
