Foreign Currency

Many banks will charge you a transaction fee if you buy your foreign currency using a credit or debit card (whether over the counter in the UK or whilst abroad). A few don't charge for debit card use but it's best to check before you go (and switch if the difference is going to be significant). You could avoid the commission charge by withdrawing the cash from a UK cash machine and exchanging it at a bureau de change, either in the UK or when you get abroad.
