Sailors' Society are a Christian maritime welfare charity who provide practical, emotional and spiritual support to seafarers and their families all over the world.
With their roots dating back to 1818 the Sailors Society are the oldest maritime welfare organisation in the UK. Their important work began on the banks of the Thames in London after the Napoleonic wars when tens of thousands of sailors arrived back in London homeless and penniliess. A group of philanthropists established 7 ships along the thames and provided accomodation, clothing and food, another ship was converted into a floating chapel and the Sailors' Soceity was born.
Over the past 200 years the Society has continued to meet those practical and spiritual needs of seafarers.
Today's modern shipping industry bears little resemblance to the high masted ships of the 19th Century and seafarers are often in port for barely a few hours before moving on again. It is therefore vitally important that our network of chaplains and ship visitors reahc out with a friendly face and listening ear to those who need company after months at sea.
