Bingham Academy, Ethiopia
Bingham Academy is located in the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa. With nearly five million people, Addis Ababa is the largest city in the Horn of Africa and hosts the African Union headquarters, the United Nations regional headquarters for Africa, and nearly one hundred foreign embassies. Established in 1946, Bingham Academy is an international Christian school, serving families from the international community. Bingham's 360 students in K-12 come from nearly thirty countries. The faculty currently represents the United States, Australia, England, Ethiopia, Norway, South Africa, South Korea, New Zealand, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
Bingham Academy was established to meet the educational needs of missionary children and the majority of our students continue to be children of missionaries or Christians serving the people of Ethiopia. The remainder of our students come from the wider expatriate community in Addis Ababa. According to government regulations we can only accept enrolments from students who hold a foreign passport.
Accreditation & Curriculum
Bingham Academy is accredited by the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI) and Middle States Association (MSA). Bingham Academy is also affiliated with the Association of International Schools in Africa (AISA). We teach the Cambridge International Examinations Curriculum from Kindergarten through to Grade 12 which prepares students for the Cambridge IGCSE and A Level examinations. Cambridge International Examinations results are accepted for university entrance around the world and, in some cases, with advanced standing. More information about Cambridge can be found on their website www.cie.org.uk.
Course load & Expectations
Full-time teachers are normally expected to teach a 20 period course load. In the Middle and High Schools this would represent 4 or 5 classes. Teachers are also expected to participate in staff devotions, school chapels, playground supervision and in extra-curricular activities and events.
Life at Bingham Academy
All expatriate staff at Bingham Academy are volunteers who are affiliated with a mission organization. The Personnel Coordinator can assist with information about missionary agencies that send teachers to Bingham Academy. Staff raise financial support to meet their living expenses-Bingham Academy does not pay a salary to expatriate teachers. The staff body is made up of singles, married couples and families. Many teachers live in campus housing, others live in housing provided by their mission or in private rental housing in the community. The school boasts a wonderful indoor gym which hosts social sports on weekday evenings. Addis Ababa has a number of English speaking church services catering to a variety of worship styles and there are also many opportunities to serve in ministries with local people outside of school time.
