Trustee / Treasurer
Nepal Leprosy Trust (NLT) is a registered UK Charity (1081952) which supports medical and community work in Nepal that has a particular focus on people affected by leprosy, poverty, disability and other marginalising conditions. The work in Nepal is carried out by our partner organisation – also called Nepal Leprosy Trust – with a strong team of National staff, many of whom have worked with Nepal Leprosy Trust for many years. The work in Nepal has a Christian ethos, and many national staff are Christians. The medical work of NLT, based in south-east Nepal at Lalgadh Leprosy Hospital and Services Centre has an excellent reputation. NLT also has a presence in Ireland, and the UK, Irish and Nepal organizations have a strong ‘family’ feel with very good connection.
NLT is seeking to appoint a committed individual with appropriate skills and experience to join our Board of UK Trustees as Treasurer. Most of the current six trustee have lived and worked in Nepal at some point, although this is not a requirement.
We are keen to hear from Christians with an interest in overseas medical and community work. Specific knowledge of Nepal and/or leprosy is not a requirement as existing trustees can more than cover these areas.
Ideally the applicant will have accountancy experience, some familiarity with the Not-for-Profit sector, and will:
- be a part-qualified/fully qualified accountant, or someone with a similar level of experience;
- have some leadership experience and good communication skills, with experience of presenting financial information to a broadly non-finance audience;
- be comfortable working at a detailed level as well as thinking strategically, as this role involves vision and strategy as well as overseeing the accounts and providing some support to those carrying out the bookkeeping activities;
- be flexible with software, although experience in Microsoft packages, particularly Excel is useful. Some experience using the Xero accounting sogtware would be a bonus, as the Trust is in the process of moving to Xero, but not a pre-requisite.
Trustees play an active role in governing the charity, setting vision, strategic priorities, and ensuring the charity complies with legal, charitable, and financial requirements. This is a great opportunity to contribute to a growing Christian medical work in Nepal.
The Board meets four times a year (often on Zoom) with occasional extra meetings in between. Trustees occasionally participate in some charity events, where possible.
Following an initial conversation, further information can be made available.
NLT is a Christian Charity, and Trustees must promote and safeguard the charitable purposes for which NLT exists. These purposes are to relieve people affected by leprosy, poverty, sickness and distress in the Spirit and love of Christ. It is therefore important that Board Members are practising Christians.
