Special Educational Needs (SEN) Teacher
Job Summary: As a Special Educational Needs (SEN) teacher, you will work with students who need extra support, or require a tailored programme of learning in order to reach their full educational potential. You may work with individuals who have learning difficulties such as dyslexia, dysgraphia and dyspraxia, as well as those with conditions such as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and ADHD. Some of the students might have physical disabilities, sensory impairments (i.e. hearing or visual), speech and language difficulties, social, emotional and mental health needs, or have a combination of these difficulties. You may also work with gifted and talented students. A key aspect of working in this field is liaising with the Department of Enhanced Learning (DEL) team, personal development tutors and subject teachers in identifying individual needs and developing an Individual Education Plan (IEP) for each student. You will be responsible for creating a safe, stimulating and supportive learning environment.
Responsibilities: ● Developing and teaching structured programmes based on the Individual Education Plan of each student ● Helping students develop self-confidence, independence and abilities ● Preparing lessons and teaching materials ● Marking and assessing work ● Working with medical staff, therapists, psychologists and other departments to secure and maintain excellent communication and continuity of practice ● Talking to parents and carers about a student’s progress ● Organising professional development activities for staff attending meetings, statutory reviews and training workshops.
Requirements ● Bachelor’s degree in Education with postgraduate diploma in Special Needs ● Fluent English
Preferences ● 2-3 years’ experience of teaching SEN students in primary and/or secondary school. ● Ability to work on own initiative and be proactive ● Commitment to excellence and personal achievements of all SEN students ● Flexibility, drive, energy and enthusiasm ● Approachability and a sense of humour ● Ability to be a good team player with a good understanding of how teamwork ● contributes to school improvement ● Excellent verbal and written communication skills ● Ability to work under pressure, prioritise tasks and manage time effectively in order to meet deadlines.
