Operations Manager

Rainham Foodbank which is part of the Trussell Trust Foodbank Groups is a registered Charity and a Company Limited by Guarantee. The foodbank has been operating in the London Boroughs of Havering and Barking and Dagenham for the past 7 years.

The Rainham Foodbank in addition to the provision of emergency food parcels is running a numbers of “More Than Food” projects enhancing restorative dignity and recovery of aspirations to the vulnerable members of the Community. Rainham Foodbank recently received a grant from the Big Lottery Fund for its “More Than Food” projects. As part of this expansion, the foodbank aims to employ a Manager to oversee the day to day management of the foodbank including the recruitment, supervision and training of volunteers.

Job Title: Rainham Foodbank Manager

Reports to:  Director/ Trustees

Hours: Full Time 37.5 hrs/week (Mon - Fri, 5 Days per week to include some weekend and evening work) Some flexibility in working hours may be agreed.

Salary: £35,000 p.a including London Weighting

Annual Leave: 25 days per year plus statutory public holidays

Position Summary:

The foodbank manager is responsible for ensuring the development and smooth operation foodbank activities and the More than Food projects. Your primary goal is to assist people in crisis by the provision of emergency food. The role will also involve the promotion of our work to churches, other faith groups, schools, local organisations, businesses and individuals. Line-manage the Foodbank Volunteers and any other staff.

The role will have a wide range of responsibilities. These include promoting the vision and values of the charity, providing team with a stimulating and supportive environment, overseeing a team of regular volunteers as well as maintaining and increasing standards of customer service to the end users.


Planning and budgeting for the foodbank

 Prepare a plan and budget for the Rainham foodbank and report accordingly

 Deliver the plan within agreed allocated budget annually, adjusting only where agreed

Monitor standards and outcomes

 Ensure that accurate data records are maintained for food stock and client data

 Liaise with existing voucher-issuing agencies and clients to evaluate the effectiveness of the service and identify areas for improvement

 Act as a point of contact for volunteer welfare problems

Oversee the provision of emergency food and services to foodbank clients at foodbank centres:

 Liaise with the owners of foodbank centre premises on the use of the building for foodbank purposes, including mutual site security

 Visit foodbank distribution centres regularly, and liaise with foodbank centre leaders, to monitor operational standards and procedures, and the service provided to clients

 Recruit volunteers to rosters covering opening hours

 Carry out induction and provide or monitor role-specific training for new foodbank volunteers

 Monitor the suitability of foodbank centre locations and opening times, and undertake scoping, premises negotiation, volunteer recruitment and training as required.

Develop support services that will help clients break the circle of poverty

  • Where appropriate monitor and evaluate client needs beyond food
  • Liaise with distributors and other service providers to provide services beyond food.
  • Monitor the signposting activities of foodbank centres and promote good practice.
  • Evaluate and, where appropriate, engage in More Than Food programmes to build clients’ resilience, address barriers and develop coping strategies.
  • Improve and manage other allied services of the foodbank including debt management skills and employability skills, and combating loneliness and isolation

Monitor the foodbank warehouse and distribution of food

  • Provide line management to volunteer staff, including initial training, performance management, professional development and regular liaison of programme/service leads
  • Support the volunteer staff in their organisation of annual Harvest and Christmas appeals, including mail-out, talks, sorting and storage.

Carry out promotional activities

  • Undertake and initiate regular talks to supporters, voucher-issuing agencies, donor groups and corporate partners to raise project awareness, donations and funding
  • Speak to, and/or participate in local church services, school assemblies, local faith and non-faith groups, and meetings with local community groups
  • Speak to local media about the work of the foodbank
  • Represent the foodbank at networking events and conferences
  • Oversee the content of the foodbank’s website and social media  
  • Undertake regular public presentations and speaking engagements to raise awareness and resources to sustain the Foodbank.


o Report against agreed targets to the Director/Trustees.

o Consult with Rainham Foodbank Director/Trustees regarding priority needs.

o Investigate complaints against Rainham foodbank and report the outcomes to the Director/Trustees.


Essential Experience

o Experience of working or volunteering in an organisation that deploys volunteers

o Experience of developing strategy and partnerships

o Experience in communication in a variety of settings, formal and informal

Key Skills

o First class communication skills, both written and oral – including the ability to present confidently to groups

  • Effective management of staff with good interpersonal skills, having a good understanding of vulnerable people and effective management of supported volunteers.

o  Ability to work unsupervised and to meet tight deadlines

o  Strong organisation and planning skills, also management of the foodbank development

o Empathy and ability to work with people from disadvantaged, marginalised, or socially excluded backgrounds

o Ability to work on own initiative and co-operatively with other team members and departments

o A sound understanding of, and experience of engagement with, churches of all denominations

o Ability to contribute to the overall leadership of the Rainham Foodbank.

Experience of financial planning.
