Infection Prevention & Control Nurse

The Infection Prevention & Control Nurse volunteer position, part of the Hospital, will be located on the Africa Mercy, the world's largest charity hospital ship. The preferred minimum commitment for this role is twelve weeks. We recommend all interested applicants to submit an application at least six months in advance of your target service date.

Summary:  Responsibilities include collecting, analysing, and providing infection data and trends to nursing staff and health care practitioners; consulting on infection risk assessment, prevention and control strategies; providing education and training; and implementing evidence-based infection control practices, including those mandated by regulatory and licensing agencies and guidelines from the World Health Organization (WHO) and Centre for Disease Control (CDC).

About you:

  • Mercy Ships alumni preferred, but not required
  • Commitments 12 months or longer require successful completion of On-Boarding program
  • Registered Nurse with BSN preferred, or Masters in Public Health (MPH), or Certified Medical Technologist, or Bachelor's degree in microbiology or epidemiology
  • Association for Practitioners in Infection Control (APIC) training course or equivalent
  • Certification in Infection Control (CIC) preferred
  • Current Basic Life Support certification is required; ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) and PALS (Paediatric Advanced Life Support) are optional
  • Minimum five years’ experience in a hospital setting or disease surveillance experience in a public health setting
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Clear criminal records check, background check and/or working with children certificate (or national equivalent)
  • Fluent in English
  • International Driver's Permit required
