Debt Advice Team Lead: Poole Foodbank CMA
10hrs/wk, £10.40/hr + pension
What is this all about?
The Faithworks Wessex (FW) Community Money Advice (CMA) project provides support to clients who are experiencing debt problems and financial difficulties. We are part of the national Community Money Advice network which means we are able to function as debt advisors, compliant and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA).
The project has entered a new phase whereby each of the FW foodbank/life centres now have a CMA team (debt advisors and budget coaches) as part of the overall support at that centre. The core team are all experienced debt advisors. We need to bolster the teams’ debt advice capacity in Blandford. This is especially essential with the forecasted rise in the numbers of people facing financial problems as the cost of living rises.
We work very closely with other agencies within the area (Citizens Advice, Shelter, BCP Council, CAP) and accept client referrals from a variety of different agencies.
As a Christian-based initiative, we believe that the project needs to demonstrate the qualities of generosity, integrity and grace towards those who seek help and support. We will do this to the highest standards of professionalism and full compliance to both the FCA and the FW and CMA Policies and Procedures together with the appropriate safeguarding and Health and Safety regulations in the spirit of the Christian conviction to support our communities.
What is the Job purpose?
Our goal is simple: we want to see people free from debt, so that they can “live life to the full”. Therefore, the jobholder will be successful if they fulfil the following purposes:
· Overseeing, coaching and mentoring of Poole based volunteer Budget Coaches and Debt Advisors to help individuals get out and stay out of debt.
· Provide professional debt advice to referred clients and supporting the team in providing debt advice to clients.
· Understand the wider needs of the individual they are supporting, signposting and referring them to other support as needed.
· Provide cover when the foodbank deputy manager is on holiday or absent for some other reason.
· The post holder’s working week will need to include three weekdays excluding Mondays.
Duties and responsibilities
1. Overseeing, Coaching and Mentoring
a. Working with the FW CMA Coordinator to ensure new and existing Budget Coaches and Debt Advisers in Blandford are well supported and clear on their roles and working in a way that’s compliant with the Financial Conduct Authority.
b. Overseeing referral of new clients and allocating according to team capacity.
c. Manage client waiting lists.
d. Ensure Budget Coaches and Debt Advisors are appropriately trained, undertake continual professional development and have the necessary tech and resources they need.
e. Ensure BCs and DAs operate in accordance with FW policy.
2. Debt Advice
a. Respond quickly, prudently and accurately to referrals, contacting the person (face-face, phone, video) and working with any local budget coach to understand their situation.
b. Assess the client’s financial situation and needs and provide appropriate debt advice ensuring that it is within the FCA Compliance guidelines and the Policies and Procedures of FW/CMA.
c. Provide appropriate benefit checks for clients, encouraging them to apply for additional available support and signposting to CA or other agencies where required.
d. Communicate with a client’s creditors with professional integrity ensuring that the client’s needs are foremost.
e. Ensure that all documents relating to the client appointments, contact, information and related agencies are kept accurate, safely and secure being fully aware of GDPR. Identify, record and pass on appropriate stories from clients (ensuring their consent is recorded first).
f. Ensure that all client appointments, contact and information is promptly entered into the CMA Catalyst software ensuring a clear audit trail.
a. Develop a strong relationship with the foodbank/life centre team and keep them updated with information/data from CMA in Poole.
b. Develop strong professional relationships with other agencies and organisations working within the area.
c. Maintain up-to-date knowledge regarding changes in current legislation as it relates the CMA project.
d. Attend relevant training as determined by the FW CMA Coordinator.
e. Develop regular communications with the rest of the FW CMA team, attending and contributing to team meetings.
f. Ensure accurate monthly reporting of CMA activity.
The successful jobholder will ideally use their hours flexibly.
Skills, competences and experience:
• Completed or willingness to complete Level 1 & 2 Generalist Community Money Advice Debt Advice training with the goal of completing Level 3 within the allocated time scale or equivalent.
• Experience of working with vulnerable people, especially those experiencing financial difficulties.
• Experience of working in a customer facing role.
• Experience of working effectively in a one-to-one interview situation.
• Experience of working within professional boundaries, both financial and safeguarding.
• Evidence of excellent organisational skills with ability to learn and adapt to systems, and evidence of great time management.
• Evidence of excellent communication skills.
• Ability to actively listen, empathise and act accordingly without judgement or prejudice.
• Ability to use a computer, in particular MS Office programs.
• Ability to travel.
• Knowledge of FCA Compliance and Authorisation guidelines.
• Knowledge of the issues facing those on low incomes and benefits.
• Knowledge of the UK Benefits System.
• Knowledge of local voluntary and community sector.
